Jill's Speaking & Travel Schedule

Jill Hurst-Wahl has worked in and around information for most of her life.  Her background is in information technology and library science.  She has been both a programmer/analyst and a corporate librarian.  While a corporate librarian, she worked on competitive intelligence research projects and helped to build a competitive intelligence system that used digitization as one of the methods of inputting information. That was more than 15 years ago and Jill has continued to do work both in the areas of digitization and competitive intelligence.

The area of digitization has become very important to Jill because of its possibilities.  First, digitization offers the possibility of making more information available to a greater number people by making materials available electronically.  By digitizing materials and making them available over the Internet, someone can find and view items that he might never have been able to see otherwise.  Second, digitization is more than just hardware and software, it includes project planning, content/item selection, intellectual property rights, access systems, digital asset preservation and much more.  Beginning a project can be frightening because of the desire to get it right and that leads some to decide not to undertake a project at all.  Others are stopped by issues surrounding funding, staff training and workload management.  Jill enjoys working with organizations on digitization projects and providing training on digitization planning so that organizations understand digitization's positive possibilities and do not get paralyzed by all of the aspects of a potential project.

Jill's work in competitive intelligence remains important to her.  She has provided information to companies in many industries including financial services, consumer electronics, medical devices, heavy equipment and business brokerage services.  In addition, she has helped to build databases and systems (e.g., MNIS' DR-LINK) to be used for gathering information.

Jill is a frequent speaker and author. She has published articles in several industry journals including Searcher, One Person Library, and EContent. In 1999, she wrote a book entitled DialogWeb/FT – Navigating the Full Text Periodical Jungle: Titles, Variants, Data Gaps and Duplications for Hermograph Press. She currently writes a blog entitled Digitization 101.

In addition to Hurst Associates, since 2001 Jill has been a senior instructor for Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, teaching graduate courses in management, digitization, and business intelligence. She has taught both in the classroom and online (using WebCT).  Her online classes have attracted students from across North America as well as from other countries.  She also teaches workshops for both business executives and library staff members.

In 2007, Jill was appointed to the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, which advises the Board of Regents on matters pertaining to libraries in New York State.
