Learning how to do competitive intelligence does not occur overnight.  It takes time, patience, and practice.  Here are some resources that can help you get started in developing a competitive intelligence program.  And remember if you would like assistance in developing a competitive intelligence program, or help on a specific project, please contact Hurst Associates.

Competitive Intelligence: Having Your Ear to the Ground (AFSMI.ppt), a 45 minute presentation given on  Dec. 14, 2004 to AFSM International.  This presentations gives an overview of competitive intelligence and provides a few resources for getting started.

Competitive Intelligence: A Sword For That War Called Business (MACNY.ppt), a half-day workshop given on June 4, 2004 to the Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) to help them:

  • begin to create a competitive intelligence (CI) system for their companies.
  • move from doing competitive intelligence as a “seat of the pants” operation to making it an essential business practice.
Competitive Intelligence: Part 2 - Using Internet Resources - Hands-0n! (MACNY2.ppt), a half-day workshop given on December 3, 2004 to  Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) to:
  • teach them how to begin to locate information on companies, markets and products in order to gain a competitive advantage for their companies. 
  • give them a list of resources available and knowledge of how to use them effectively.

This workshop includes exercises that anyone can do from his/her computer using the Internet.

Books that can be helpful in learning how to do competitive intelligence include:

Berkman, Robert I. Find It Fast: How to Uncover Expert Information on Any Subject Online or in Print (Fifth Edition).  New York: HarperResource, 2000.   This is book written for ordinary people who want to learn how to locate good information.  The book teaches resources and technique.  For more information, go to Amazon.com.

Dobson, Chris.  Introduction to Online Company Research.  Ohio: South-Western, a division of Thomson Learning, 2004.  This is a textbook and some sections are meant to be used for reference rather than for reading.  A very good book for anyone interested in learning how to research and organize their results.  For more information, go to Amazon.com.

Fuld, Leonard M. Competitor intelligence: How To Get It, How To Use It. John Wiley & Sons, 1985.  A classic written by someone well versed in providing and teaching competitive intelligence.  For more information, go to Amazon.com.

Tyson, Kirk W. M.  The Complete Guide to Competitive Intelligence (2nd Edition). Leading Edge Publ., 2002.  Written by a respected member of the competitive intelligence community.  For more information, go to Amazon.com.
